At FMI, inserts were manually mounted into steel plates. An operator applied glue and screwed the inserts into the sheet metal. Since the plates serve as enclosures for high-tech machines, errors were unacceptable. FMI asked us to automate the process.

This offers two major advantages: it makes the screw solution significantly less error-prone and much more cost-effective. We tested our concept with a test setup and it proved to be a success.
FMI expressed a desire for automated insert feeding, but together we opted for a more efficient solution: operators place the inserts in trays, a quick and simple task.
Although it wasn’t part of the original request, we also proposed enabling the system to apply glue patterns. The machine automatically applies a layer of glue between the sheet metal and the frame, significantly improving product quality. This addition was well received.
At first glance, we’ve built a relatively simple screwing system. However, the strength of this solution lies in its inherent process control: torque and distances are precisely monitored. And it’s significantly more cost-effective as well.
We utilize the robot’s vision function to determine the exact position of the holes. Although the plates are pre-oriented, this approach ensures the correct location is verified each time—providing an extra layer of quality assurance.
This project is a prime example of how we love to collaborate with our customers – from process to end product.
In the first step of our approach, we explored various screwing solutions. The results from the test setup proved decisive. Currently, we are working diligently on further optimizing the screwing solution.
We achieve success together with you: side by side, engineer to engineer. This way, we help you find a reliable solution that drives the desired process improvement and results.
